Express yourself...
“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”
― Martha Graham

What does it feel like when you stifle what you are feeling?
Stop a moment and reflect. When was the last time you found yourself holding back what you felt?
You felt emotion, passion, energy, something real inside. Then for whatever reason, you chose not to share yourself, not speak up.
It happens to me sometimes. Something inside me is uncomfortable, agitated, or just off. Other times it maybe complementary, joyful, or appreciative, and I will stuff those expressions too!
While I hold back, I might experience fear, shame, guilt, and even FOMO! However, when I express myself un-filtered and not overthought, I feel lighter, more accessible, and energized.

Why would I do that to myself? Why would anyone?
We diminish ourselves for all kinds of reasons. Our family dynamics, systematic and cultural standards, being “Politically Correct,” past trauma, etc. All of these play a direct or indirect part in how we show up.
To be fair, there are certain times when biting our tongues or stifling a comment is in our best interest, for safety, to be kind, or just to move a process forward.
However, these feelings and thoughts deserve to be shared in order to move the energy and up-level overall health. It is well documented that when we withhold our full expression, we negatively affect our mental and physical well-being.
I am unpacking the roots of holding back within my historical and current patterns. And while I am in the exploration, I am also aware of my desire to practice expressing myself as I learn about the very habits that hold me back.
Try the practice I share below. It’s simple, it feels good, and it shares good vibes with those in your space.
A Practice for Growing the Good.
When out and about or at home among friends and family. Be a catalyst for good!
First thing in the morning, connect with your breath.
Center yourself and fix your intention on finding something you LIKE or LOVE ABOUT SOMEONE that day and share it with them.
When you notice something that moves you, do not hesitate. Instead, approach the person and try language like this: “I am practicing expressing things that I like/love about people in my life. I wanted you to know that… (Say what you feel) Have an amazing rest of your day!”
This practice of sharing the good feelings that come through you will naturally build confidence, grow the good vibes in your world, and overall make you healthier.
