Giving Birth To Ourselves

"He allowed himself to be swayed by his conviction that human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but that life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves."

- Gabriel García Márquez

I wanted to remind everyone that we are unveiling a long-anticipated new offering soon (like really soon)! I want to share a few details with you while we wrap up some final bits over here.

This is our calling, and it has been brewing inside us for many years while teaching and supporting people in moving past limitations. We hope our new offering will inspire you to commit fully to living with courage and love for yourself and others.

We are committed to providing all current and future clients individualized support within our collaborative partnership. In support of that, we are taking on only a limited number of new engagements, with individuals and couples ready to take that next step toward living the life of your dreams.

Stay tuned! All the delicious details are coming soon, and we cannot wait to share them with you.

Late last night, in the half-awakeness that followed all the hugs to grandparents and the packing and weighing of suitcases, Cameron asked a question I loved. “The other night, I heard you say that you were fully committing to me for the first time in your life.” she asked, “What did you mean by that?”

Before daybreak this morning, Cameron and our oldest daughter, Abriella, left for Virginia; Dabney Rose and I will reunite with them on August 12th. This two-week stretch is one of the few times our family has been apart for longer than a day in over two years. What I have found most notable about these rare times is the distinctly different manner in which we treat one another in the days before.

Within this liminal space, there is a sweetness, a pause. We might hold one another’s gaze just a second longer, savoring these moments of intimacy within our family. Our girls, who adore each other like no other siblings I have been around, are even more loving and affectionate toward each other. They leave little notes and drawings for one another around the house. Anticipation of separation brings out the best in us, LOL.

The Free Dictionary defines birth as “to bring something into existence.” I love this wording, it is powerful. Personal.

“What am I bringing into existence? What am I birthing?”

I turned 50 this month. I can sense now, more than any other time in the past, an awareness being born in me—a caring, prioritizing, and setting of boundaries around my time and energy.

Cameron’s question called attention to an exercise I have been practicing. I look at each moment as a chance for rebirth: an opening to bring the life I desire into existence, a renewal of my commitments, and a reawakening of my focus. Talk about powerful!

When I told Cameron and our friends that “I was fully committing to her for the first time in my life.” the declaration carried the full, present weight of a commitment being reborn at that moment. Our words are so powerful. Birthing them through speech and thought are our literal pathways to experiencing their effects in our lives.

Last week Cameron wrote eloquently on the idea that our names support us in defining who we are and that through a deeper connection with the roots of our names, we can more powerfully own who we are.

This Sunday, July 31, I lead a 90 min vinyasa practice at 10 am at the former Kindness Hilltop studio, and we will be diving deep into LIFE, the 2nd part of the cycle: Birth > Life > Death.

I look forward to seeing you there in person or online – it will also be live streamed!!!

Below is a practice for identifying what you are bringing into existence.

Practice For Identifying What You Are Bringing Into Existence

My offering for your reflection this week: What are you birthing in your life RIGHT NOW?

Spend a few moments reflecting on this question in meditation. It will be most impactful for you to sit quietly with this question as well as keep it in the back of your mind throughout the day and notice what rises to the surface. Think of “birthing” in this sense as what you spend your time on each day.

If you are having trouble coming up with things, try looking back at the last thirty days by going through your calendar and reviewing your appointments and overall focus.

Use this exercise to identify what you have been committed to and where you need to reestablish or negotiate your relationship with an ongoing commitment.

PS: Let’s face it. These past couple of years have motivated us all to create meaningful change in our lives.

Every single person we know has experienced significant change during this time. Some changes have been good, some challenging, and some downright head scratching!

We want to support you all in creating change—rather than being a victim of change—to cultivate the life you dream about!!

It will never be easier than it is right now, at this very moment, to have what you desire in your life.
